Let Your Employees Complete You
The truth is, most of us mortals are nowhere close to being all-around players, so we have to compensate for our shortcomings. One way to do it is to choose your employees like an NBA owner builds a championship team. You don’t draft twelve shooters, right? No, you draft a well-balanced roster that can collectively do it all.
This ties back to Lesson #12 in All In: “You can kid others but don’t kid yourself.” As CEO of whatever venture you’re undertaking, it’s up to you to be honest when you assess your strengths and weaknesses, then hire people that will complete your business and you as a businessperson.
I know you might be saying, “But Bill, I’m an all-around player!” I like the confidence, but the odds are very good that you’re not as great as you think you are! Not yet, at least.
And even if you can do it all, you’re only one person. If you want to run a successful business, you have to delegate, so do it intelligently. The last thing you want to do is hire a bunch of flashy shooters that can’t play together. Just look at the New York Knicks!
So are you ready to draft a perfectly balanced team of winners that will immediately make you a better CEO? Awesome! People will think you’re a genius if you can build an amazing customer-first roster of employees who will buy your vision, then go out and run through walls for you.
